How I spent my weekend, by Serene Vannoy

Some days, the chronic pain I live with means that I stick close to home, get a lot of rest, and whine a bit more than usual. This weekend, fortunately for me, two things were true:

1) I didn’t have any plans after Friday afternoon; and
2) My friend Jen reminded me that sometimes moderate pain responds well to distraction and ignoring

So I set about to distract myself. I caught up on some Usenet and email and websurfing. I did a few dishes, though nowhere near enough. And I cooked. Quite a lot. Even caught some photos of it with my new camera, courtesy of my darling James. Thanks, James!

Let’s see, now, what did I make this weekend?

Saturday:

Breakfast: eggs and shredded wheat for James (I’ll have to post about that; it’s one of his Mom Foods); cereal for me
Lunch: Cooked up some chorizo and potatoes. James had it over nachos; I ate a little plain
Dinner: “Little feast” (we call it that, anyway): garlic-cheese baguette; heirloom tomatoes; brie; apple slices; meyer lemon and garlic olives (and some salami for James)
Snacks: Ice cream

Sunday:

Breakfast: pancakes, by request from James, who thinks it’s super-awesome that I take the trouble to make homemade pancakes. He won’t believe me that it’s practically no trouble at all, especially after you find a recipe you like and memorize it. James and the kid had a few pancakes each; I had one, and a bowl of Rice Krispies, ’cause that’s how I roll (or how I snap/crackle/pop).
Lunch: Salmon chowder and oat bread

Dinner: More salmon chowder. I mean, come on, the stuff was amazing! I’ll post more about it later.
Snacks: Cut-up veggies and hummus (I cut up all the veggies I bought yesterday and put them into baggies for ease of noshing. The hummus was half-garbanzo, half-white-bean, because I only had one can of garbanzos left.)

I intended to make yogurt today, but didn’t really have enough milk, so I didn’t. Later this week, I’ll post recipes and more photos, but for now, I think it’s time to go rest again.

  1. All these dishes look great! Your friend’s recommendation about distraction reminds me of my aunt in the Philippines who does housework when she has a headache. She swears it always clears up, unless she’s using some kind of harsh chemical, then she’ll stop and rest.

  2. Re the half-garbanzo, half-white-bean hummus, I just had a sandwich using some spicy fava bean hummus I had gotten at the natural-foods grocery to see what I thought of it. It tasted good, but smelled like such a dead-on imitation of barf as to be rather off-putting, I don’t know what about it would have caused that.
