For me, Mom Food is often about comfort as much as anything else.  When I’m sick or down, that’s the most likely time I’ll crave my mother’s cooking.  In the past couple of months, it’s been obvious to me that I’m not the only one.

One of my standard, go-to comfort foods is tomato soup and grilled cheese.   When I’m sick or pre-menstrual or just sad, this helps. It really does!  One of the first “Awww, he loves me!” moments I had with James was when I was sick one day and he fixed me an upscale version of this comfort food: tomato-and-basil bisque, and a smoked-gouda grilled cheese on sourdough. Yumma.

Campbell’s was the soup of my childhood. My mom made wonderful soups (and I’ll share them all with you here), but my father preferred canned soups, so she kept them in the house, all Campbell’s: minestrone, pepper pot, cream of mushroom, tomato…  Add a grilled cheese sandwich made with white bread and American slices, and we’re talking heaven.

Sadly, these days, Campbell’s tomato soup has become too sweet (corn syrup in tomato soup??) for me to enjoy, so I’m experimenting with making my own tomato soup. No recipe yet, but the basics are a sautee of onions and celery, some good canned tomatoes (I like San Marzano), and a blender.  When I get it exactly where I want it, I’ll post about it, but meanwhile, it’s your turn:

What is your comfort food? In comments, please post a description and/or link to the food you rely on when you’re feeling blue or sick or lonesome.  Do you crave the waffles your dad fixed on holiday mornings?  Does it have to be your grandma’s cinnamon oatmeal?  Let me know: I love learning about your Mom Food cravings! I’m a voyeur that way.

I run The Mom Food Project, which was born out of love for my mom and a desire to preserve the recipes of my childhood, which didn't actually exist in written form until I quizzed my mom and wrote the recipes down.

  1. When I was a kid, we had cream of tomato soup on Sundays after church. This is from one of those church recipe books. My mother always used home-canned tomatoes:

    4 tablespoons margarine
    4 tablespoons flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    2 cups milk
1 big can tomatoes (2 1/2) or 1 quart home canned tomatoes

Heat tomatoes in a 2 quart pan. In a three quart pan, melt the butter. Add flour, salt and pepper. Cook slowly for two minutes. Add milk and stir until thickened. When contents of both pans are boiling add the tomatoes to the milk mixture, blending well. Do not cook further. Serve with croutons or crackers.

I was an adult before I knew that all these years I’d actually been making a roux. :)

  2. It is good to know that I am not the only person that thinks Campbell’s tomato soup is too sweet. I am also going to start experimenting with my own soup recipes, and I can’t wait to try yours when you finally share it. I am sure my Hubby and kids will be thrilled for me to serve them something new. http://CleverlyChanging.com

  3. Growing up I hated both cheese and tomatoes. I was obviously crazy or under the misguided influence of my crazy mother. But this certainly looks delicious NOW!

    1. Hee! Thanks. Guy (my partner) hates tomatoes, but is okay with tomato sauce and ketchup, and my sister was the same way. I think it’s a texture thing.
