Photography

I’m not a photographer.  In fact, I’m really not that good at any kind of visual art. I’m not down on myself about it; it’s just not one of my strengths. I have lots of other strengths, so it’s okay.

It’s kind of a liability when you’re doing a food blog, though.

Yesterday, the kid took some of the photos of dinner, and they turned out well (she’s a professional artist, with three years of photo training), but my pictures turned out pretty well, too (I’ll show you when I post on the rib roast later on).  I decided that what I want is not to stop taking the photos for this blog; I just want to get better at it.  So for the next little while, I may add another timesink to my online browsing habit: websites about food photography technique. If you have any to share, I’d be grateful.

And here’s a photo of today’s breakfast, to underscore how much I need the help. Both the tomato in the sandwich and the peach were from our organic box. Both were delicious.

  1. Aww, thanks! Do you read tastespotting or foodgawker? I strive to be in that league, photo-wise.

  2. That’s a fine photograph! Do you do any post editing? My only criticism is that it is on the warm side. What kind of camera do you have? Most give some presets for white balance and when you’re inside under tungsten (yellow) or fluorescent lights it’s important to choose the right white balance. You could also edit it after the fact, but that’s not always successful.

Another tip I can think of that might help you is to use as much natural light as possible. If you have to take your food outside to photograph, that’s okay! If not, try to get as much light on it as you possibly can.

    1. Thanks for the tips, Lynda. I’m thinking of getting a light box, because I live in a basement and don’t get much natural light (plus, I live in the Bay Area, where it rains a lot). I’m going to have to read the manual for my camera and figure out the white-balance thing. Thanks again!

  3. I’m no expert, but I think most of the pictures look great. I suppose there is always room for improvement, but if the pics get “too perfect” that might detract from the essence of the site. Just a thought.

    1. Yeah, I have thought about the line between unprofessional-looking photos and ones that just look homey, y’know?

(Hiya! I was happy to see your name in my inbox.)
